Something remarkable is happening off the coast of West Africa. There, a floating installation called an FSRU, converts natural gas into liquefied natural gas (LNG). This process takes place directly offshore, without the gas ever coming ashore . The transformation of natural gas into LNG is achieved by using special refrigerant gases that cool the gas down to -162 °C
Schenk deliveres these gases safely to their exact destination using our own tank containers, transported by train or ship all the way to the floating LNG installation.
Safety and quality guaranteed
It all starts in Alblasserdam at Schenk Intermodal. This is where we prepare our special tank containers for their long journey ensuring they are ready to safely transport the liquids and gases. This technical preparation is essential to ensure reliable transport and compliance with the highest quality standards.
The empty tanks are then shipped by rail to loading facilities across Europe. There, they are filled with the refrigerant gases required to liquefy natural gas on board the FSRU.
”Our tanks are flushed with nitrogen, pre-cooled, and thoroughly tested . They are only filled once they pass all quality checks . This is the only way we can guarantee maximum safety and quality,” explains Paul van de Reijt, General Manager Schenk Intermodal.
Specialised transport from start to finish
After loading – performed by specially trained drivers -the tanks return to Alblasserdam for a final technical inspection. Here, we double- check that all requirements are met before the tanks can begin their sea voyage.
The loaded containers are then transported to the Port of Rotterdam, from where they are shipped to West Africa.
A vital link in the LNG production chain
The refrigerant gases we supply are used on board the FSRU to cool natural gas into liquid form. This complex process is essential for the commercial export of LNG. Only in its liquified state can LNG be transported to destinations such as the Maasvlakte.
