The Quiet Force Behind Our Fleet

Schenk Mechanics - Workshop

Every truck that takes to the road does so thanks to the expertise of our mechanics. They keep our fleet safe, reliable, and always ready to go. From everyday journeys to the  transport of hazardous materials across Europe. At Schenk, mechanics are not just technicians, but true problem-solvers who think ahead, work together and keep learning. Joseph Melko, truck technician, shows why this job is about far more than just turning spanners.

A day in the workhop with Joseph

Every morning Joseph starts with his tablet, which tells him exactly what needs to be done that day. Sometimes it’s routine maintenance, sometimes  a complex fault, and sometimes work on a hazardous goods trailer. “You only discover halfway through the job how complex it will,” says Joseph.

One of his highlights? Replacing a complete steering system including the dashboard – something never done in the workshop before. At first, they weren’t sure if it would fit into the schedule, but step by step, Joseph and his team worked through the challenge. Within two days, everything was running perfectly again – a performance they look back on with pride.

Safety as second nature

In a workshop, speed is important, but never at the expense of safety. Joseph always works with protective gear and keeps his workspace tidy. When welding or working with hazardous goods, he wears extra protection. For him, it is simply a part of the routine. Working step-by-step, watching carefully, and thinking about what you’re doing, so that everyone can work with confidence and without stress.

Teamwork in the workshop

Expertise and safety go hand in hand with collaboration. The workshop is a place where colleagues support one another. “If something heavy needs lifting, someone is always right there next to you,” Joseph explains. “In between we laugh and chat. It makes the work enjoyable and helps us get through the pressure of a complex job.”

This team spirit ensures everyone can grow, take on new challenges, and that new colleagues feel welcome from day one.

Moving forward with technology

A mechanic’s work goes far beyond spanners: the workshop is now a digital environment. Joseph uses tablets to read fault codes, regenerate DPF filters, and record maintenance directly. This way, he knows exactly what has been done and what still needs attention.

Scanners and specialist software, such as Volvo DEXA, help him diagnose issues and thoroughly check each vehicle. “Every truck and trailer comes with its own technology. With electric vehicles, I check the

battery management; with container systems it’s the  sensors and loading data. You are constantly learning, and that keeps the job exciting.

Joseph sees new technologies as an opportunity to grow. At Schenk he gets the resources and targeted training to stay ahead. “I dive into manuals, online resources, and workshop documentation with my colleagues. That way we stay up to date and can handle every job safely and efficiently.”

Passion for the trade

What drives Joseph in his work is his love of the technology. “Every day is different and  brings its own challenges – that is what makes it so fascinating. You take on a new job, apply your skills and see that it works. That’s incredibly rewarding. And in the end, thanks to your efforts, our trucks keep running—from Scandinavia down to Spain.”
